Accommodation for Events in Auckland: Book Before It Fills
Accommodation for events in Auckland gets scarce fast when a big conference, a test match or a run of stadium concerts lands in the same week, and the central city runs out first. If your trip is tied to an event, book as soon as the date is confirmed, and stay within walking distance of the venue if you can.
The venues that fill the central city
NZICC (New Zealand International Convention Centre)
Auckland's convention centre opened on Hobson Street in February 2026, next to SkyCity. It holds up to about 4,000 delegates, with a 2,850 seat theatre and 33 meeting spaces, and more than 120 events were booked for its first year. One large conference there can take a big share of central city beds on its own. From the Viaduct it is an easy walk up the hill, and from The Heritage, further up the same street, it is closer still.
ANZ Viaduct Events Centre
The events centre sits on the water at the western edge of the Viaduct, between the basin and Wynyard Quarter. Conferences, gala dinners and exhibitions all use it, and it is a few minutes on foot from anywhere around the harbour. In recent years the Business Events Expo, the conference industry's own trade show, has been held here in November.
Spark Arena
New Zealand's largest indoor arena is in Quay Park, at the eastern end of the waterfront. Most people know it for concerts, though it also takes gala dinners and big corporate functions. When a major act plays several nights in a row, hotels across the city feel it. From the Viaduct it is a longer walk east along Quay Street, or a short taxi ride.
Eden Park
Eden Park in Kingsland is the country's largest stadium: All Blacks tests, international cricket and the biggest concerts. On a normal day it is a 10 to 15 minute drive from the city. On an event day, driving is the worst way to get there, because there is no general parking. Take the train to Kingsland and walk. Auckland Transport usually adds extra services for big events, and many tickets include public transport, so check both before you go.
The recurring events to plan around
These come back every year, and the weeks around them are when central city rooms go first.
ASB Classic tennis (January). Two weeks of international tennis at Mānuka Doctor Arena (formerly the ASB Tennis Centre) in Parnell, women's week first, then men's. January is also the height of the summer holidays, so the city is already busy.
Cruise season (October to April). Ships berth at Princes Wharf and Queens Wharf, right beside the Viaduct. Most passengers sleep on board, but the waterfront is busier on ship days and some passengers stay in town before or after their voyage.
Auckland Boat Show (autumn). Run by the NZ Marine Industry Association since 1999, using the Viaduct Events Centre and the water around it. The 2027 show is set for 1 to 4 April. If you work in the marine industry, the Viaduct is exactly where you want to be that week.
Techweek (May). A national technology festival, with its Auckland hub in Wynyard Quarter in 2026.
Auckland Marathon (late October or early November). The course starts in Devonport, crosses the Harbour Bridge and finishes at Victoria Park, a short walk from the Viaduct. Expect road closures on race morning.
The NZICC, Spark Arena and Eden Park each publish their own calendars. Look at all three for your dates before you book. A large conference or a stadium show does not always make the news ahead of time.
Accommodation for events in Auckland: how early to book
There is no exact rule. What tends to hold:
- For a major conference, test match or concert week, book as soon as your date is confirmed. Leave it until the month before and you will have fewer choices and a longer walk.
- For a group, start earlier again. Several apartments in one building are much easier to find with time to spare.
- Summer weekends, January especially, are busy even without an event.
- If your plans might change, check the cancellation terms when you book instead of holding off.
Companies that send people to the same event every year can save themselves the scramble by booking next year's stay as soon as they get home. Group bookings and invoicing are covered on the corporate accommodation page.
Making the most of event week
Most events leave you a free evening or two. Do Auckland lists entertainment and evening options around the city, and if you are in town for a test at Eden Park, the All Blacks Experience at SkyCity is just around the corner from the NZICC.
